Last night at the Emmy Awards, Netflix released a “She Rules” advertisement, centering on all the powerful women who rule the screens on Netflix.
From Orange is the New Black to The Crown to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the ad highlights all the incredible Netflix shows that star strong women.
The voiceover closes with the line, “Here’s to the women who rule our screens” plastered across the screen.
In an industry plagued with a lack of diversity, this video has been a long time coming. For years, Netflix has been releasing shows with strong female leads — shows like Orange is the New Black, Grace and Frankie, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
The television and film industry has faced a lot of scrutiny over the past few years for its lack of diversity in leads — the number of white male leads is still significantly higher than any other identity.
There needs to be more diversity in gender, race, ethnicity, class, ability, etc. For the second year in a row, every Academy Award nominated actor was white.
Diversity is so much of a problem in the television and film industry that multiple people commented on it this year at awards shows — Aziz Ansari at the Emmy’s, Jesse Williams at the BET Awards, and Kevin Hart at the Oscars, just to name a few.
While this Netflix ad doesn’t solve the problem of diversity in Hollywood, it does point to the small steps forward we are making. And I don’t know about you, but I could watch the “She Rules” video all day.
